Cat and Mouse
We played cat and mouse last night, Mauricio and I were the cats, the little furry being we discovered to be living in our apartment was the mouse. Looking back there were a couple of hints:
- I noticed that two potatoes, which we keep in the cupboard under the counter, had mysteriously rolled themselves from their basket onto the ground.
- I was reading at the kitchen table in the afternoon with a cup of coffee and playing with my hair, as is my bad habit. I thought a saw a little brown flurry along the kitchen cabinets to behind the fridge. I investigated but found nothing and assumed it was a trick of the eye, my brown hair flitting across my eyes.
But the dead give away was later at night, as we were about to go to sleep. We heard a scratching paper sound from the kitchen. We held our breath… and then we heard it again, scratch, scratch. Ee-e-e-ek we had a mouse!
We went out to investigate, Mauricio bold, I reluctant. Sure enough there the little guy was, horsing around behind and between the fridge and stove. Now normally mice don’t bother me, but the thought of sharing my home with one made me a bit queasy. We tried to rustle him out by swishing the broom around, but to no avail. I wasn’t sure I wanted him to come out; what would we do? We had about given up, I was making mental plans to buy a mouse trap, when he darted out from the oven and began a wide circuit of the house, by way of the baseboards.
I shrieked and Mauricio’s “defend and protect” mode kicked in. He lunged at the little creature with the broom, part attack, part attempt to detain. I squealed and burst into tears, the poor little mouse.
It’s silly because I certainly wouldn’t want to share my space with him, but I couldn’t sleep well, thinking of his lifeless furry little body as we lifted him on newspaper into the garbage bag. We, mouse killers. And I couldn’t eat breakfast today, a strange mix of repulsion and pity.

Baby dino!!
It's a baby dinosaur!! I didn't know they still made those...
This is little finn, the baby that Cathy and Josh made, wearing his dino gear, a little something that I made for the occasion!

In other news, I was sick again last week. I thought I would die, I was shivering and moaning and ejecting toxins from both ends of my body. A lady from the office brought a "treat" for tea-time. She said they were cheese empanadas, but when I bit in I realized that it was a llaucha - BLECH - a half-moon shaped pastery filled with a runny (snotty) cheese concoction . But once you bite in you're more or less comitted, no forgiveness for picky eaters here. Of course noone else in the office was sick - iron stomachs. Anyways I count myself lucky that I was sick for only one sleepless night.
Other than that, nothing of import to report on... Married life goes well!!
